Winter Tires Mandatory on Most B.C. Highways Starting Oct. 1

When the calendar flips to October, it is not just the falling leaves that signal change. In B.C., Oct. 1 marks the official start of mandatory winter tire season across most major highways. These rules will remain in effect until April 30, though in areas without mountain passes or heavy snowfall, the requirement wraps up a bit earlier on March 31.

Where Winter Tires Are a Must

Drivers heading into the North and Interior, as well as sections of South Coast routes like the Sea to Sky, need to be properly equipped. Even stretches on Vancouver Island, including the Malahat and highways 4, 14 and 28, are part of the list. While the Lower Mainland and much of southeastern Vancouver Island escape the rule, it is always smart to stay prepared when the weather shifts.

What Counts as Winter-Ready Tires

The province recognizes two types of approved tires. If you see the M+S (mud and snow) marking or the mountain snowflake symbol on the sidewall, you are in the clear. Just make sure they are in good condition, with at least 3.5 millimetres of tread depth. Skipping this step could land you a $121 fine, and nobody wants that.

Chains, Commercial Vehicles and Extra Safety

Commercial drivers also need to have chains ready to go on most routes in the province. Signs along the highways will show exactly when chains must be used. This keeps traffic moving and helps everyone stay safer during storms.
